Dark Matter characterization at the LHC in the Effective Field Theory approach

چکیده
We have studied the complete set of dimension 5 and dimension 6 effective operators involving the interaction of scalar, fermion and vector Dark Matter (DM) with SM quarks and gluons, to explore the possibility to distinguish these operators and characterise the spin of DM at the LHC. We have found that three factors — the effective dimension of the operator, the structure of the SM part of the operator and the parton densities of the SM particles connected to the operator — uniquely define the shape of the (unobservable) invariant mass distribution of the DM pair and, consequently, the shape of the (observable) Emiss T distribution related to it. Using χ 2 analysis, we found that at the LHC, with a luminosity of 300 fb−1, certain classes of EFT operators can be distinguished from each other. Hence, since DM spin is partly correlated with the factors defining the shape of Emiss T , the LHC can potentially shed a light also on DM spin. We have also observed a drastic difference in the efficiencies (up to two orders of magnitude) for large Emiss T cuts scenarios with different DM spin, thus indicating that the DM discovery potential strongly depends on it. The study we perform here can be applied more generally than within the EFT paradigm, where the DM mediator is not produced on-the-mass-shell, such as the case of t-channel mediator or mediator with mass below 2MDM, where the invariant mass of the DM pair is not fixed.

In this research we study the Mono-Z signature along with dark matter production at the LHC in a renormalizable dark matter model. We look at processes with L+L-+MET in the final state. We simulate signal and background events at central mass energy 14 TeV We then evaluate the LHC sensitivities for some points in the model parameter space for two integrated luminosities L=100 fb-1 and L=1 ab-1 ...
متن کاملUnitarisation of EFT Amplitudes for Dark Matter Searches at the LHC
We propose a new approach to the LHC dark matter search analysis within the effective field theory (EFT) framework by utilising the K-matrix unitarisation formalism. This approach provides a reasonable estimate of the dark matter production cross section at high energies, and hence allows reliable bounds to be placed on the cut-off scale of relevant operators without running into the problem of...
متن کاملSearch for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson
This article reports on a search for dark matter pair production in association with a Higgs boson decaying to a pair of bottom quarks, using data from 20.3 fb−1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decay of the Higgs boson is reconstructed as a high-momentum bb̄ system with either a pair of small-radius jets, or a single large-radi...
متن کاملNon-relativistic effective theory of dark matter direct detection
Dark matter direct detection searches for signals coming from dark matter scattering against nuclei at a very low recoil energy scale ∼ 10 keV. In this paper, a simple non-relativistic effective theory is constructed to describe interactions between dark matter and nuclei without referring to any underlying high energy models. It contains the minimal set of operators that will be tested by dire...
متن کاملDetermining Reheating Temperature at LHC with Axino or Gravitino Dark Matter
After a period of inflationary expansion, the Universe reheated and reached full thermal equilibrium at the reheating temperature TR. In this talk, based on [1], we point out that, in the context of effective low-energy supersymmetric models, LHC measurements may allow one to determine TR as a function of the mass of the dark matter particle assumed to be either an axino or a gravitino. An uppe...
